Trip overview

Learn to speak Japanese – the authentic way – while living in the heart of Fukuoka for up to 12 weeks on this unforgettable trip.

What better way to learn a language than to jump right into the deep end? Engaging with the community as you live like a local in one of the most advanced countries in the world.

On this done-for-you trip, you’ll get everything you need to live in Fukuoka while learning Japanese, including:

  • Small group classes. With a max of 8 students per class, you’ll get plenty of personal attention from your tutor during 20 structured lessons a week in a relaxed, supportive environment.
  • Accommodation included. For stays of 1-3 weeks, you’ll stay in a homestay with a local family. For stays of 4+ weeks, you’ll stay in a private room in a shared house in Fukuoka. Or you can upgrade to private accommodation at an extra cost.
  • Private airport transfer. Our in-country partners will be there to support you from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave with private airport transfers to/from your accommodation in Fukuoka.

Japan is a cultural powerhouse. From the dynasties of the 3rd century CE to modern life resembling a sci-fi movie – this is an island of the unexpected.

You’ll need a whole lifetime to explore everything Japan has to offer. So a good start would be to learn the language while you live amongst the locals in this vibrant country.

Can you imagine your life in Japan? You’re surrounded by the eclectic mix of old and new that’s so prevalent in Japan.

Ancient shrines and temples cosy up to sleek skyscrapers clad with flashing billboards. You’ll sit next to a traditional Geisha on an ultra-modern bullet train, with manga/anime everywhere and a fashion scene found nowhere else on Earth.

You’re embracing the culture and getting involved with the locals, which means your Japanese is coming along FAST. You’re not only learning how to speak Japanese by day, but you’re getting to practise on your new neighbours by night!

Let’s not forget the interesting culture, delicious cuisine, incredible natural landscapes (with ski slopes galore), friendly and polite people….

This trip is perfect for you if you’d like to scratch beneath the surface on your trip to Japan. Knowing a few phrases of the local language will always unlock a new world of life-changing experiences for any traveller.

So imagine what will happen when you start whipping out full Japanese sentences on the streets of Fukuoka?

Trip details

Our Study in Fukuoka trip is designed to get you travelling, living and learning Japanese overseas as smoothly as possible. Fukuoka is located on a stretch of absolutely stunning Japanese coastline with incredible beaches only walking distance from the school.

This Japanese school was founded with one goal in mind: “Japanese for everyday life, rather than academic Japanese.” They’re not here to help people pass exams. Instead, they want to give you the skills to talk with the locals and let Japanese culture become a part of you. In this trip you’ll be learning in small (the smallest in Japan) group classes with an atmosphere that will make your classmates end up feeling more like family. After class there are a range of optional add-on activities to choose from, or you and your new friends can do what you like to unleash your new skills on Japan.

Arrive in Japan with the reassurance that you will be many steps ahead of every other traveller in search of international experience in Asia. You can hit the ground running in your studies, with everything else taken care of. While you’re there you’ll have a range of accommodation options that you can choose from depending on what you want to get out of the trip. Homestay; for those who want to have people to practise your Japanese on at all times, but also want to deep dive into what family life and culture is like in Japan. Guest house; for those who want to bond even deeper with their classmates and meet other students both foreigners and Japanese nationals. Or private apartments; for those that want to have their own space.

Your included accommodation will be a homestay with a local family (1-3 weeks) or a private room in a shared apartment in Fukuoka (4 weeks+). Alternatively, you can upgrade to a private apartment for an additional charge. If you wish to extend your homestay beyond 3 weeks, you can do so as well, with an additional charge.

Spend your time studying in Japan, immersing yourself in the over-the-top (in the best possible kinds of way) culture, exploring the breathtaking landscapes and history, and jetting off to neighbouring countries, leaving the logistical stuff to us. Embrace a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel, live and teach in Japan learning a lifelong skill that will stay with you forever.

Requirements

You must take a Japanese language test before your arrival to determine your starting level. Complete beginners are not required to take a language test, but must know the hiragana alphabet.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, souvenirs & spending money.

Accommodation & meals

Your style of accommodation depends on how long you’ll be in Japan. For trips of 1-3 weeks, you’ll stay in a homestay with a local family. For trips longer than 4 weeks, you’ll stay in a private room in a shared house in Fukuoka.

If you want to extend your homestay beyond 3 weeks, you can do so at an additional cost. Alternatively, you could upgrade to a private room in a guest house or private apartment, also at an additional cost.

As for meals, get ready to indulge your taste buds on an unforgettable culinary journey during your trip. You will have the opportunity to try a wide array of amazing meals that will leave you wanting more. While these delectable eats are not included in the trip fee, worry not, as Fukuoka offers a plethora of wallet-friendly options that are bursting with flavour.

You will have the chance to explore the vibrant street food scene, where stalls beckon with mouthwatering skewers of yakitori, crispy takoyaki, and delicious oden. Don't forget to try traditional dishes like Hakata ramen, known for its rich broth and tender noodles that will warm your soul. And for the seafood lovers, fresh sashimi and grilled fish are abundant.

Keen to try something off the beaten tourist track and try out your newly acquired Japanese language skills? Venture into Fukuoka's bustling food markets and discover a variety of fresh produce, seafood, and locally sourced ingredients. Dive into DIY okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake of your own creation, or sample the delightful variety of authentic sushi rolls.

In Fukuoka, you are in for a treat as the city offers an irresistible blend of flavours and affordable eats that will make your Study Japanese trip an unforgettable culinary adventure. And being well-equipped with two great options for clean, safe and convenient accommodation, you'll be able to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Trip itinerary

Arrival

If staying with a host family, once you’ve touched down at the Airport or have arrived at Hakata Station you will be met by your hosts and taken to your accommodation in Fukuoka via public transport. If you’ve given yourself a few days between your arrival and the course starting, use this time to get acquainted with the city and your new classmates/Homestay hosts! Fukuoka is an amazing place so try to make the most of it straight away!

Day 1

Punctuality is very important in Japanese culture, so don’t be late! Your specific class times will be determined by your course schedule, and the weekly class schedule is provided one week ahead of time. On your first day you will retake a level check test to ensure that you’ll be placed in the right class. This test includes written and interview portions.  After that you'll run through your orientation. This will include information about the school, classes, study methods, Japanese culture and manners and life in Japan.  Then dive straight into your class! You’ll undertake a two hour Japanese class in the afternoon. Followed by an optional one-hour free tour of the Hakata area.

Ongoing

You’ll have four classes a day, though your schedule may vary week-to-week. Morning classes run from 9:30am – 1:10pm and afternoon classes are from 11:25am – 3:50pm or 2:05pm – 5:45pm.  Your weekly schedule will depend on your class level, and you'll receive each new week's schedule about one week in advance. Daily classes are separated into two lessons of Japanese Grammar and two of Language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking).  You may want to undertake additional courses offered by your school; Standard Japanese, Plus Conversation, Traditional Culture, Pop Culture, and nextGEN (a mixture of Traditional and pop). These will take place outside regular school hours or on weekends.   Otherwise, your weekends are yours to explore the city, or go further around Japan!  We’ll constantly keep in touch with you throughout your stay. If at any point during your trip you need advice or support, our team will be on hand to answer all your questions. Don’t forget you can jump on our social media pages too or buzz our 24/5 Emergency Support Line for urgent matters.

Why Study

The main purpose of this trip is to get you speaking Japanese like a local while you live like a local. Which makes this trip perfect for those who want to connect more with the country, instead of simply stopping in for a visit.

Our in-country partners operate with one goal in mind: “Japanese for everyday life, rather than academic Japanese.”

These classes won’t teach you formal Japanese with strict rules and fancy words. It’s all about being able to communicate with Japanese people in Japanese, so you can let the Japanese culture become part of you as you get to know it more intimately.

One of the many reasons you’re encouraged to strike up conversation with locals after hours – even if you’re a newbie.

Living amongst the community while you’re learning the language will fast track your path to success. It will also help you integrate into the community so you’ll get to know Japan much better than most tourists.

Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
