Trip overview

South America flies under the radar when it comes to TEFL locations. But now you can call the historic capital of the Inca Empire home as an English teacher in Cusco, Peru.

Cusco holds significant cultural and historical importance for the Inca people, and serves as a vibrant centre for Peruvian culture as a tourist hub of South America. This city acts as the gateway to the mysterious Inca citadel, perched high up in the Andes mountains – Machu Picchu.

On this life-changing trip, not only do you get everything you need to start your English teacher life with a bang, you also get:

  • 150-hour TEFL certification – This engaging, rigorous course will open the door for you to travel and work as a qualified English teacher worldwide!
  • Practical teaching experience – Make sure you know what you’re doing with 15+ hours of practical teaching and observation, with real ESL students, with the supervision and feedback from a TEFL instructor.
  • Job placement assistance – Once you’ve completed your course, our experts will help find the right English teaching job for you. Choose to stay in Latin America, with positions possible in Peru, Guatemala, or Costa Rica, or head off to teach in Asia, Europe, or even online!
  • Choice of accommodation – For a complete cultural immersion, choose to stay in a private room in the home of a local Peruvian host, where breakfast and dinner will be provided daily. If your prefer more privacy, opt for a private apartment, though meals are not included with this option.
  • Orientation activitiesA walking tour to get the lay of the land, cooking classes to demystify Peruvian food, and salsa classes to dazzle dance floors around the world!
  • And much more!

Life in Cusco is varied, vibrant, and full of fascinating culture – making the city an important UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s one of the few cities in the world where indigenous culture is still widespread – expressed in the traditional markets, festivals, and incredible cuisine!

Talking about food, Peru as a whole is the undisputed food champion of South America! From fine dining with celebrity chefs all the way down to the drool-worthy blend of Spanish and indigenous delights being cooked up on the street.

Let’s not forget about the world-class hiking – the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu being the most popular. The city is also the jumping off point for hiking the Sacred Valley of the Incas – a region rich with archeological sites, indigenous villages, and gorgeous landscapes.

But this isn’t only an adventure full of cultural immersion and eating delicious food.

It’s an opportunity for you to get a professional certification that gives you a meaningful occupation teaching English with a local income that will help you fund your travels and live comfortably.

As you complete your TEFL course, exciting opportunities await. Armed with newfound knowledge and certification, it's time to step into the field. Upon completion, you'll receive a personalised letter of recommendation - a valuable asset that opens doors and highlights your dedication to success.

But what about finding the perfect job match? Fear not, as our in-country partner stands ready to assist. With extensive networks in Latin America, they'll provide job-finding support to help you secure your first paid English teaching position. And, if you wish to change countries after your first teaching contract, they can help with that too!

Whether you envision teaching in bustling cities or tranquil coastal towns, their guidance ensures a smooth transition into your new role as an English educator. 95% of TEFL graduates find an English teaching job within the first 30 days of completing the course, with many securing their job during the course!

Rest assured, we are committed to being with you every step of the way, ensuring your goals are met, and you embark on an unforgettable adventure that will transform your life in Peru!

You must also be computer literate and bring your own laptop for completing classroom assignments. Please be aware that to pass the TEFL course, you are required to submit two academic papers and complete a final portfolio.

Accommodation & meals

Once you touch down in Cusco, you’ll be taken straight to your included accommodation: your choice of homestay or private apartment.

Option 1 is to stay in a private room with a friendly Peruvian host family.

All homestays are conveniently located within a short distance, making it easy to access the TEFL institute within 10-20 minutes by walking or a quick 15-25 minute taxi/bus ride. You’ll get your own key so you can come and go as you please.

While may homestays do not have WiFi, don't worry! You'll have full access to the institute's computer lab and WiFi throughout your trip, ensuring you can complete your course work and connect with family and friends back home. Or, hotspot data from your local Peruvian SIM card.

Your host will provide breakfast and dinner 7 days a week. And you'll have plenty of tempting options available for lunch! Peruvian cuisine is a delightful blend of flavours, combining indigenous ingredients with influences from Spanish, African, and Asian cuisines. Treat yourself to iconic dishes such as ceviche, lomo saltado, and anticuchos.

If you'd like even more privacy, option 2 is perfect for you! You'll stay in a private apartment that includes all of the important things, like linens, towels, kitchen utensils, and WiFi.

Please keep in mind that meals are NOT included if you choose to stay in a private apartment. No matter which type of accommodation you choose though, free coffee, tea, and snacks will be available to you at the TEFL institute's snack bar!

Trip itinerary

Arrival

When you arrive at the Cusco airport, your private transport will take you to your pre-arranged accommodation. This will be your home for the next 4 weeks as you complete your TEFL qualification.  You’ll meet your classmates and trainers that’ll be with you for the duration of your course.

Weeks 1-4

You complete your 150-hour TEFL qualification with our in-country partner.  This involves 7-8 hours a day of classroom training and in-class presentations, 20-30 hours of required reading and written assignments, and 15+ hours of observation and practical teaching.    You’ll present lessons to non-English speaking classes and individuals while TEFL instructors supervise and evaluate your skills. You’ll receive constructive feedback to help you improve as a teacher.  Once you’ve passed your course, our in-country partner offers extensive help finding a job through references, access to special job websites and Latin American contracts, as well as assessing employment contracts (typically for job opportunities in Asia).

Week 5+

Every teaching position is different, making each person's experience unique! Most teachers get time off during the Christmas and Easter holidays. This is the perfect opportunity to use that salary you’ve been saving up to explore the incredible landscape of your new home. If you choose to stay and teach in Peru, the ESL programs run Mon-Fri so your weekends are free to explore Peru with their fellow teachers.  You could spend a lifetime getting to know the nooks and crannies of Cusco. Or strap on your hiking boots and find some altitude in the dizzying array of drop-dead gorgeous mountains surrounding this ancient Inca capital.   We’ll be in touch with you throughout your stay. If you ever need advice or support our team is available to answer your questions. And our Global Emergency Line (24 hours, Mon.-Fri.) will help with urgent matters.  Don’t go alone. Go with Global.

Why Teach

The main purpose of this trip is to get your TEFL qualification so you can teach English as a foreign language anywhere in the world

As tourism grows and globalisation makes the world smaller, English continues to be the ‘global language’ for mutual communication.

Which means that people who live in non-English speaking countries could open up a world of opportunities for themselves and their communities by learning to speak English – especially in tourist hotspots like Peru.

This is the perfect trip for someone who wants to follow a career in education, but wants to travel the world while they’re doing it. A stint as an English teacher overseas will look great on your resume and set you up for success for a future in education.

Alternatively – if the corporate ladder isn’t your cup of tea – this is also one of those travel ‘hacks’ that’ll allow you to travel indefinitely.

Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue.
