Trip overview

A home away from home in every country in the world – a traveller’s dream. It’ll take a while to do this everywhere, but we can help. Starting with Germany!

Get taken in by a local family with a private room in their home and full board – in exchange for some English tutoring (..and no tutoring or teaching experience is necessary!).

On this life-changing trip, not only do you become part of a local family for 1-3 months while you help them learn English, when you go with Global, you get:

  • Host Family Match - Personally approve a family (via access to family profiles and video calls) before you even leave home.
  • Private Live-In Accommodation - Rent and utilities are included on this trip, which means you get your very own bedroom in your host's house.
  • Pre-approved Family Agreement - Sign your agreement before you leave. Which means you’ll know your responsibilities, time off, and expectations before you get on the plane.
  • Free access to public transport - You get to use trains, trams, and buses, all over Germany FOR FREE for the duration of your trip.
  • Plus loads more!

This is the perfect trip for someone looking to have a meaningful travel experience in a limited time frame. There’s no special visa required for this trip – only a standard tourist visa. Which means you could call Germany home for up to 90 days!

Can you imagine your life in Germany?

You’re living in a trendy neighbourhood in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, or Hamburg. You hear from your new local friends that accommodation is hard to come by and expensive. Something you don’t have to worry about because you have a private room – and all meals – taken care of by your host family.

Your tutoring responsibilities – a couple of hours a day teaching English to the children –  usually happen in the afternoon. Which means your mornings are mostly free to spend how you please.

Visit one of the many parks, have breakfast at your favourite local cafe, or explore the sights that make your new hometown a world-famous destination.

Having a home away from home in a foreign country is bucket-list stuff. Especially when it comes with a private room and full board with a local family.

In exchange, you tutor the children (and sometimes the adults) to speak English for a maximum of 15 hours a week.

And when you book with Global, you book with the best. You get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle.

Your host family placement is confirmed (by you) before you leave, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Trip details

Your main responsibility on this trip is to be an English tutor for the family. This usually involves speaking English as much as possible with the family. It may also involve structured lessons where necessary. You could be helping the children with homework, doing English lessons, and generally being a role model to the children.

In exchange, you get to live in Germany with a local family. You get to immerse yourself in a foreign country and get to know the locals. This rich cultural experience is the best way to get to know a new country. This is the way to get to know the real Germany – first hand.

Having a home away from home in a foreign country is bucket-list stuff. Especially when it comes with a private room and full board with a local family.

And when you go with Global, you get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle. Your host family placement is confirmed (by you) before you leave, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Requirements

To qualify, you’ll need some sort of tutoring or child-caring experience, a high school diploma, to be a non-smoker and no mental health or eating disorders in the last 12 months – medical screening will be necessary as proof.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, visa, criminal background check, souvenirs & spending money.

Accommodation & meals

You’ll be staying in your own private room in your host family’s home. All meals will also be provided by your host family.

You can see yourself as part of the family, living in their home and eating meals with them in exchange for your English speaking skills.

This means you’re expected to help out around the house as any other family member would.

Trip itinerary

Before You Leave

Meet your host family over video calls following a thorough matching process, before you leave home.

Day 1

Once you land at the closest major airport to your placement, your host family will be waiting for you. You’ll meet the family and set off to their home. Spend your first few days settling into your new home while you explore your surroundings and get to know your host family.

Week 1+

Since you chose your host family, agreed to your responsibilities, and signed a contract before you left home, there are no surprises when it comes to your specific responsibilities.  You’re spending a few hours each day playing with the children and teaching them to speak English in a playful way in the process. Most weekends are free. Giving you plenty of time to use that free public transport access to explore Germany.

Ongoing

We’ll constantly keep in touch with you throughout your stay. If at any point during your trip you need advice or support, our team will be on hand to answer all your questions. Are flights & insurance included?

While we would love to include flights and insurance in our trip packages, it is not feasible to have a fixed price due to the diverse destinations, trip durations, and individual coverage needs of our travellers from around the globe. However, once you register for the trip, we will assign you a dedicated Travel Concierge. They will work closely with you to arrange the ideal flights and insurance tailored to your specific adventure. Rest assured, our team is here to ensure you have a smooth and hassle-free travel experience from start to finish!

Will I get to meet the host family before I go?

Just like our Au Pair trips, we are renowned for our exceptional matching process. We invest time in understanding your preferences, enabling us to provide access to a diverse range of family profiles and involve you in the matching process. Through video meetings with parents and children, we encourage a strong connection and compatibility. As your departure approaches, you will have the opportunity to reconnect with your host family. We take pride in this thorough process, ensuring that uncomfortable situations are exceedingly rare. However, if any unforeseen circumstances arise, rest assured that we are committed to finding you an alternative placement. Your satisfaction and well-being are our primary concerns as you embark on an incredible tutor experience, creating cherished memories with your host family.

How many hours of tutoring is expected, will I have much free time?

We typically require tutors to dedicate around 15-25 hours per week to tutoring. These sessions are usually scheduled after the children return home from school, giving you lots of free time to discover and explore the incredible surroundings of your new home. This balanced schedule ensures that you have the opportunity to make the most of your tutor experience while also immersing yourself in the vibrant culture and attractions of your destination.

Do I need a special visa to be a tutor?

For most placements that are less than 3 months in duration, tutors typically travel on a tourist visa. However, if your placement extends beyond 3 months, our dedicated Trip Coordinator will guide you through potential options for obtaining a long-term visa. We understand the importance of compliance with immigration regulations, and our team will provide the necessary support and information to ensure a smooth visa process for your tutor journey.

Do I get any pay as a tutor?

While some tutor trips may offer a small weekly stipend, most placements are unpaid. Instead, in exchange for your valuable assistance with the children, you will receive full board, including a private room and meals. In certain cases, additional benefits like access to a car may be provided. Furthermore, you will have the privilege of staying with a welcoming host family who can offer guidance, support, and the firsthand knowledge of being excellent local tour guides. Your rewarding experience as a tutor comes with the security, comfort, and incredible cultural immersion that a host family provides.

Do I need any tutor experience?

No, prior tutor experience is not required at all! While having some childcare experience is preferred, it is not necessary for you to have any formal tutoring background. As long as you possess a strong sense of responsibility and are proficient in English, you will be able to excel as a tutor. Your dedication and expertise in English skills will enable you to guide and support the children in their learning journey. We prioritise your enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to make a positive impact as a tutor in creating a valuable and rewarding experience for both you and the children you work with.

Why should I book now?

After the last unexpected disruption to travel caused by the..c word..people are now more eager than ever to venture out and explore the world, determined not to miss out on any experiences. Global Work & Travel works on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Booking earlier ensures that you don’t miss out on the best intake, season, placements and more! We recommend our travellers take 6-12+ months to plan their trip for a reason - to make sure you’ve got everything organised perfectly, stress-free. As a Global Traveller you’ll get exclusive access to gWorld, our personalised app where you can keep all of your important documents and trip details in one spot and gain insider access to everything Global. This is where you will find exclusive Marketplace Deals, a unique social network to connect you with other like-minded Global Travellers, access to our Academy with an ever-growing range of skills & languages, and so much more. Think all of your favourite apps merged into one, but like, better? Why not give yourself something to look forward to by booking that trip!

Can I travel with a friend or partner?

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. You can learn more about the great referral rewards program inside your gWorld account once you join. And for those who decide to go-it-solo, we’ve made it easier to meet other Global Travellers in the same region as you. Just like any other social platform, you’ll be able to interact, share, chat and meet with some really cool people who are doing trips just like you!

Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
