Trip overview

Nepal – home to the highest mountain on the planet, sacred traditions dating back centuries, and some of the most committed mountaineers you’ll ever meet. On this trip, you’ll be contributing to a dog and farm animal rescue sanctuary just outside Kathmandu.

Break out of your day-to-day routine and embark on an adventure that will make the world a better place and help you grow as a person.

On this all-inclusive volunteer trip, not only do you get to live and volunteer with trusted organisations in Nepal. When you go with Global, you get:

  • Volunteer project placement – Guarantee your spot at our screened and vetted project partner in the mountains of Nepal. Start your volunteer journey without spending months searching for a reputable organisation on the other side of the world.
  • Comfortable accommodation & 3 meals a day – Stay in comfortable twin-share accommodation close to local restaurants and historical sights.
  • Yoga session and local sightseeing. Your first couple of days will be jam-packed with local sightseeing tours and a yoga and sound healing session.
  • And much more!

Can you picture it? You spend your days helping injured and traumatised animals in need just outside Kathmandu.

Some animals will be in bad shape after suffering severe neglect or being rescued from a slaughterhouse. And YOU will be part of the team that gives these animals a second shot at life – this time with plenty of love and care.

Besides, a driving force behind this project is that animal welfare is a community concern. Which means you'll be intimately connected with the community as you help these animals in need.

For most people, visiting Nepal is a bucket-list experience.

Although most people don’t get the chance to experience something like this. Being immersed in the community while you help injured and mistreated animals be nursed back to health.

And when you go with Global, you get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle. Your volunteer placement and accommodation is sorted before you leave, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Purpose & impact

The number one purpose of this trip is to create a more compassionate world for all living beings.

This project focuses on providing love and compassion to previously abused animals, street animals and farm animals rescued from slaughter. Because all creatures deserve respect and compassion in this world.

This project provides a safe and loving home for over 200 animals – including dogs, cows, pigs, goats, and even buffaloes. Each of these animals have their own stories – often full of extreme cruelty and hardship.

But now they have a new lease on life, and your contributions will go a long way to helping them heal from their traumatic past.

Your responsibilities may include preparing food and feeding animals, grooming, and bathing animals, and cleaning animal enclosures.

One of your most important contributions is spending time with and showing love for the animals in your care. This is a great way for you to learn more about the animals. But more importantly, it will give the animals a chance to feel love and care again so they can regain their trust in humanity.

If you’re looking to celebrate your love for animals by caring for those in need, this is the trip for you.

IMPORTANT: The animals that arrive at this project are often in really bad shape. Imagine open wounds, recently poisoned animals, or animals that have suffered extreme neglect. Which means if you’re squeamish, think carefully about how much you could handle on a project like this.

On the flip side, if stuff like that doesn’t bother you, this is your opportunity to contribute to an important animal welfare project helping animals at a critical point in their recovery journey.

If you have veterinary experience, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved with the technical team in treating the animals.

Requirements

To qualify for this trip you must be between 18-75 years of age.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, visa, vaccinations, souvenirs & spending money.

Accommodation & meals

Once you touch down at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you’ll be taken straight to your initial hotel accommodation in Thamel, the tourist centre of Kathmandu, where you’ll spend your first two nights.

For the rest of your trip, you’ll be in twin-share accommodation in Lalitpur, a smaller city just outside Kathmandu. You’ll have plenty of local restaurants and historical sights within walking distance from your accommodation.

With your project placement and accommodation sorted, what will you do about food?

You’ll be given 3 vegan meals every day, prepared fresh for you by the project staff. Enjoy the typical Nepalese fare – delicious curries and bread and potato based dishes.

Trip itinerary

Arrival

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a driver will be waiting for you. You’ll be taken to your initial hotel accommodation in Thamel for your first 2 nights. You’ll be briefed about your new neighbourhood and program and meet any fellow volunteers. Please note, you may be the only volunteer on the project as it's a very local and authentic project that doesn't take in a lot of volunteers.

Day 2

Sight-seeing in Kathmandu Valley. You’ll set off on a guided tour of multiple World Heritage sites, including Kathmandu Durbar Square and Boudhanath. Your evening will be free to explore the night time sites of Kathmandu.

Day 3

Yoga, sound healing, and pottery. You’ll get a yoga and sound healing program in a professional studio for a couple of hours in the morning. You’ll then go to a Pottery Training Center where you’ll get to make some handmade pottery at a workshop. This is the end of your orientation and you’ll be taken to your volunteer accommodation in Lalitpur for your volunteer program.

Day 4+

Now it’s time to get straight into your volunteer duties. You’ll be volunteering for 5-7 hours a day, 5 days a week. You can choose your working hours based on the schedule provided.  Due to the nature of volunteering with an animal welfare organisation, your days will be flexible as you adapt to the needs of the animals. But here’s an example itinerary of how your days could look:  7.30 am: Breakfast time! Enjoy the delicious vegan breakfast prepared for you by the project staff.  9.00 am: Time to get ready for a full day of looking after animals. Pack up what you need for the day and head over towards the shelter.  09.30am: Morning briefing with the project coordinator so you know what you’ll be doing for the day.  10.00 am: After orientation, you’ll visit the sanctuary to learn more about the animals in their care.  10.30 am: Time to join the other volunteers in cleaning dog bowls and kennels and doing some laundry.  1.00pm: Lunch time! Head to the kitchen to grab some lunch with the other volunteers and project staff.  1.30pm: Help the staff as needed. You could be getting cattle feed ready, fold dry laundry, or get involved with dog bathing and grooming.  3.30 pm: It’s time to get the paralysed dogs up and at ‘em! You’ll help collect the wheelchairs and put the dogs in them. And then you’ll sit back and be amazed at how excited these dogs are to get moving – working legs or not.  4.00 pm: Time for an evening walk with the animals. It's time to take the dogs for their evening walk, and have a great time with your furry friends. 4.30 pm: Feeding time for the animals.  5.30 pm: Finish the day with a final clean of the kennels and you’re done. The rest of the evening is open for you to explore your neighbourhood or get to know your fellow volunteers better.  8:00pm: Dinner time. You’ll be given vegan dinner by 8pm.

Ongoing

The longer you volunteer, the more excursions you get included in your trip.  Volunteer for 2 weeks or more and you’ll get the opportunity to to get involved in a sightseeing trip to Kathmandu.  Volunteer for 4 weeks or more and you’ll also get the chance to go on an epic hiking trip to exotic locations in the Kathmandu Valley.  Volunteer for 6 weeks or more and you’ll also get an extensive tour of the historical places of Nepal in the Kathmandu Valley.  Once your placement is over, you can choose to stay on in Nepal to explore what else it and the surrounding areas have to offer.  Hop onto gWorld – our social app for Global Travellers – and link up with other travellers to explore Nepal together. You could even join a bucket-list Global Getaway with other Global Travellers. Do your best to scale Mount Everest (don’t freeze while in the queue for the summit), learn more about the fascinating and ancient religious practices in the area, or hop the border to explore further through Asia.   Whatever you choose to do, we can help make it easy.  We’ll be in touch with you throughout your stay. If you ever need advice or support our team is available to answer your questions. And our 24/5 emergency support line will help with urgent matters.  Don’t go alone. Go with Global.

Once you arrive at your destination, the fee covers transportation, accommodation, and in most cases meals and some amazing excursions you'll do alongside other international volunteers. This comprehensive support is essential to provide you with a positive and secure volunteering experience, which is of utmost importance to us. Will I receive guidance and support before starting the volunteering trip?

Absolutely! Before starting your volunteer placement, you will receive comprehensive pre-departure support, which includes project-specific information, cultural orientation, and advice on preparing for your journey. Additionally, most trips include on-site training and an orientation to ensure you are well-prepared and confident in your volunteer role.

How do I choose the right volunteer trip for me?

With so many incredible options, we understand that selecting the perfect volunteer trip can be tricky. That's why we recommend booking your favourite one, and your dedicated Trip Coordinator will guide you through the project details. They will consider your interests, skills, desired location, and the impact you want to make. If we find another trip that better suits your preferences, we can easily swap you over to ensure you have the ideal volunteer experience. Rest assured, we're here to help you find the right fit!

How long should I volunteer for?

We offer flexibility in our volunteer trips, allowing you to choose the duration that best suits your schedule and desired experience. While most volunteers join us for 3 or 4 weeks, our trips accommodate durations as short as two weeks or as long as 12 weeks, and even extended stays. The choice is yours!

What ages are most volunteers?

The ages of our volunteers can vary depending on the project, but we have a wide age range. Our volunteers typically range from 18 years old to 85 years old! Our Trip Coordinators ensure that all volunteers are vetted before embarking on their journey. While age may differ, what unites our volunteers is their shared passion for travel and their dedication to making a positive impact in the community or wildlife conservation efforts they are involved in. Regardless of age, anyone with a passion to contribute and explore is welcome to join our volunteer trips.

Is it safe to volunteer overseas?

Safety is our utmost priority, and it drives our thorough trip planning process and comprehensive inclusions. With a successful track record of safely sending tens of thousands of travellers overseas since 2008, we prioritise your well-being throughout the journey. Before you depart, we provide full support, ensuring a smooth and secure experience. Upon arrival, we take care of every detail, including secure airport transfers, comfortable accommodations, usually meals, and dedicated project supervision. Additionally, our 24/5 emergency line ensures immediate assistance whenever needed, providing peace of mind throughout your entire volunteer experience.

After the last unexpected disruption to travel caused by the..c word..people are now more eager than ever to venture out and explore the world, determined not to miss out on any experiences. Global Work & Travel works on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Booking earlier ensures that you don’t miss out on the best intake, season, placements and more! As a Global Traveller you’ll get exclusive access to gWorld, our personalised app where you can keep all of your important documents and trip details in one spot and gain insider access to everything Global. This is where you will find exclusive Marketplace Deals, a unique social network to connect you with other like-minded Global Travellers, access to our Academy with an ever-growing range of skills & languages, and so much more. Can I travel with a friend or partner?

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. You can learn more about the great referral rewards program inside your gWorld account once you join. And for those who decide to go-it-solo, we’ve made it easier to meet other Global Travellers in the same region as you. Just like any other social platform, you’ll be able to interact, share, chat and meet with some really cool people who are doing trips just like you!

Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
