Trip overview

Peru – a pearl of South America.

Home to a strong indigenous population that has called this land home for centuries, modern-day Peru celebrates a mix of cultures dating back to the days of Spanish colonialism.

The mystical Andean mountain range forms a spine down the middle of the country, with coastal plains stretching west towards the Pacific Ocean. To the east lies your destination for this trip: the Amazon Rainforest.

Known as the “Lungs of the Earth,” the Amazon Rainforest is under threat due to rampant deforestation by large corporations and governments. This is the purpose of your trip – conserving and reforesting the greatest rainforest on the planet.

Break out of your day-to-day routine and embark on an adventure that will make the world a better place and help you grow as a person.

On this all-inclusive volunteer trip, not only do you get to live and volunteer with a trusted partner organisation in Peru, when you go with Global, you get:

  • Volunteer project placement – Guarantee your spot at our screened and vetted project partner in Peru. Start your volunteer journey without spending months searching for a reputable organisation on the other side of the world.
  • Comfortable accommodation Stay at a homestay with a local family in Cusco before heading to your dormitory-style accommodation in the jungle.
  • Program orientation Spend your first night in Cusco for your comprehensive project orientation. Learn essential program rules, safety procedures, and project-specific tips. End your day with a walking tour to get a lay of the land.
  • Meals – Jungle conservation is hungry work, but you won’t be starving with 3 seasonal meals a day prepared fresh by the project staff.
  • And much more!

There’s nothing like jumping into the deep end to tackle a problem hands-on, and this is exactly what you’ll be doing on this trip.

You’ll spend your time ‘off-the-grid’ at a conservation site in the Amazon Rainforest. You’ll be helping the project staff with various tasks depending on their current needs – but you can be sure you’ll be knee-deep in the Amazon Rainforest for 4-8 hours a day from Monday to Saturday.

If you’ve had it with city life, you’re in luck! This project takes place in the rural parts of the Madre de Dios region, about 8-10 hours from Cusco. So it’s important to have some level of independence to thrive in this isolated jungle location.

And when you’ve had it with life in the jungle, Cusco is waiting to welcome you back to the modern world. A city so cool they slapped a UNESCO World Heritage Site title on it.

The traditional markets, festivals, and cuisine show off the blend of indigenous, European, and African influences that makes up modern-day Peru. Speaking of food, Peru is a highlight in South America. And Cusco is drool-central whether you’re fine dining with celebrity chefs or having a snack on the street.

You also have some of the most mystical mountain ranges in any direction you wander. As the gateway to Machu Picchu, you can reach this sacred site in 4-5 days on foot, or you could do a day trip with a tour guide if you’re not ready for a strenuous stroll in the Inca’s footsteps.

When you go with Global, you get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle. We offer the complete package for volunteering in the Amazon.

Our team will help you with the essentials you need to start your new journey with a bang! Including setting you up with a volunteering placement, securing your accommodation, and a whole lot more.

Purpose & impact

The main purpose of this trip is to assist with crucial reforestation and conservation projects in one of the largest and most globally significant rainforests on the planet.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will depend on the seasonal needs of the project. Some tasks you might engage in include:

  • Reforesting the Amazon by planting trees, shrubs, and orchids
  • Removing invasive, non-native bamboo from the jungle
  • Monitoring wildlife by observing and counting species
  • Organic gardening
  • Trail maintenance
  • Assisting with scientific research
  • Conducting educational workshops with local communities
  • Making repairs to the lodge or other buildings
  • Teaching English to staff or community members (especially on rainy days)

You’ll contribute physically by planting vegetation in at-risk areas and create long-lasting change by educating the local community on how to care for the jungle for generations to come!

Accommodation & meals

Once you arrive in Cusco, you’ll be taken directly to your initial accommodation.

During your one-night orientation, you'll stay at a homestay with a pre-approved Peruvian family, located just a 10-25 minute walk or bus ride from the orientation institute. You’ll share your room with 1-3 people of the same gender, and breakfast and dinner are included.

After your orientation, you’ll travel by overnight bus and then by boat to reach the Madre de Dios region of Peru, where your volunteer duties will be based.

Accommodation at the volunteer site is dormitory-style, complete with bedding and a mosquito net. You’ll also receive three meals a day prepared fresh by the project staff. Meals are typically vegetarian and depend on seasonal availability.

Trip itinerary

Before you leave

Your volunteer placement – including accommodation and 3 meals a day – is confirmed and organised before you leave home.

Arrival

When you arrive at the airport in Cusco, your private transport will take you to your included homestay accommodation. This will be your home for one night during your orientation in Cusco.  Meet your fellow travellers and host family while you settle into your new home.

Day 1 & 2

Depending on when you arrive, your first day or two will be all about orientation and getting familiar with your surroundings. You’ll receive vital information about your role in the project and what to expect.

Ongoing

Once orientation is over, it's time to head out to your project site to get started. Your working hours and tasks will depend on the needs of the project, but you can expect to be volunteering for 4-8 hours per day, Monday to Saturday.  You’ll have one day off a week to relax or explore the area. Once your trip’s over, you’re free to explore this incredible part of the world!  You could eat your way around Cusco, tick Machu Picchu off your bucket list, or whatever else your heart desires.  We’ll be in touch with you throughout your stay. If you ever need advice or support our team is available to answer your questions. And our Global Emergency Line (24 hours, Mon.-Fri.) will help with urgent matters.  Don’t go alone. Go with Global.

Can I travel with a friend or partner?

For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
