Trip overview

Ready to conquer Africa's highest peak?

Embark on a thrilling five-day climb up the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, an ancient dormant volcano in northwestern Tanzania. But first, you’ve got to earn it!

Spend your first week volunteering with the local community that has lived in the foothills of Kilimanjaro for generations. You’ll even get to spend a few days living with the Maasai tribe. Combine a passion for environmental conservation and community empowerment: outreach with local schools, plant trees, teach local women entrepreneurship skills, and more!

Could this be your next life-changing adventure?

Break out of your day-to-day routine and embark on an adventure that will make the world a better place and help you grow as a person.

On this all-inclusive volunteer trip, not only do you get to live and volunteer with a trusted community empowerment organisation in Tanzania. When you go with Global, you get:

  • Volunteer project placement – Guarantee your spot at our screened and vetted project partner in Tanzania. Start your volunteer journey without spending months searching for a reputable organisation on the other side of the world.
  • Comfortable accommodation – Relax in your shared dorm in a volunteer house in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. While trekking, you’ll stay in basic hikers' huts along the route.
  • Meals – You'll get 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, prepared fresh for you by the project staff. While trekking, a chef will accompany you to prepare basic daily meals to keep you fuelled.
  • 5-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek – Conquer one of the world’s most famous peaks and check off a life-changing experience from your bucket list. Your trek includes park fees, a professional guide and porters, accommodation along the route, and meals.
  • And much more!

To earn your spot at the summit, you'll first dive into ongoing initiatives led by passionate locals who welcome volunteers like you. Your daily tasks could range from planting trees to helping local women develop their handicraft businesses.

This is a two-way street where you’ll share tools and ideas to help the community, while they share their incredible culture and knowledge with you.

But this trip isn’t just about making meaningful change in critical causes around the world. Because you’re going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro! Imagine watching giraffes and elephants roam the savannah as the sun sets—priceless.

Visiting a country as beautiful and diverse as Tanzania is a bucket-list experience for most people. But getting to know the local community before scaling Mount Kilimanjaro? That’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

And when you go with Global, you get the full experience for a fraction of the hassle. Your volunteer placement and accommodation are sorted before you leave, so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Purpose & impact

This trip combines two impactful projects into one: environmental conservation and community empowerment. You'll actively contribute through your volunteering efforts while being fully immersed in local culture and traditions, fostering understanding and respect.

Environmental Conservation

This project emphasises the importance of environmental protection to combat climate change through education, tree planting, and plastic waste removal. Your daily tasks will focus on these key areas:

  • Education & Awareness: Conduct outreach sessions at local schools to educate students about environmental protection. These interactive sessions aim to inspire young minds to become advocates for positive change in their communities.
  • Tree Planting: Participate in a tree planting program that enhances the local ecosystem. Planting trees is a tangible way to make a positive environmental impact.
  • Plastic Waste Removal: Address existing issues like plastic waste by educating the community on its harmful effects and promoting strategies to reduce plastic use.

Through these initiatives, you'll collaborate with project staff to empower local communities to take ownership of their environmental stewardship, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the greater community.

Community Empowerment

This project aims to empower the local Maasai community through education while fostering cultural immersion and mutual learning.

  • Women’s Empowerment: Teach Maasai women entrepreneurship skills to support the development of their handicraft businesses, providing them with a source of income and independence.
  • Women’s Education: Provide education on women’s rights and gender equality, equipping women with the tools and confidence to advocate for their well-being.
  • Hygiene Education: Promote better hygiene practices among women and children to improve their overall health and well-being.
  • Children’s Education & Support: Teach children various subjects, including English language skills. Additionally, you'll help ensure they have essential items like clothes and hygiene products, providing them with the resources they need to thrive.

What extra costs will I have?

Trip itinerary

Before you leave

Your volunteer placement – including accommodation and 3 meals a day – is confirmed and organised before you leave home.

Arrival

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a driver will be waiting for you. You’ll be taken straight to your included accommodation in Moshi.  Take some time to relax, settle in, and meet your fellow volunteers.

Day 1

Once you’ve taken some time to settle in, you’ll get a warm Tanzanian welcome and thorough orientation for the smoothest transition.  Our local team will give you insights into Tanzanian culture, details about the various programs, and safety guidelines for navigating the city. You’ll also get a guided tour of the city on your first day.

Week 1

Your first week focuses on cultural immersion and volunteer duties. You’ll be taken on guided city tours, a community trek to experience the traditional way of life, day trips (including the famous Materuni waterfall, tour of a coffee farm, hot springs, and hidden gems), as well as educational evening activities like cooking classes and language lessons. You’ll also receive an orientation on the cultural norms, traditions, and life of the Maasai people.  During this time, you’ll be dedicating 1-3 hours a day to your volunteering activities. A perfect combination of making a positive impact while getting to explore the magic of the area with a local by your side.  Due to the nature of this trip, you need to be flexible to meet the needs of the program, so it won’t be the same routine day-in and day-out.  But here’s a rough idea of how your days may go:  8:00 am: Wake up and have breakfast at your accommodation.  9:00 am: Start the day with a volunteer activity for 2-3 hours. Example: working at a local school, community centre, or environmental project. 12:00 pm: Break for a snack and short rest before heading out for a community trekking experience, exploring the natural beauty and cultural sites in the area. 2:00 pm: Enjoy a packed lunch or stop at a local restaurant during your trekking adventure. 4:00 pm: Return from the trekking excursion and have some free time of your own. 5:00 pm: Participate in different games with kids such as football, basketball, playing cards, music and dance. 6:30 pm: Cooking or language class before dinner where volunteers learn traditional recipes or Swahili language basics. 8:00 pm: Dinner at your accommodation or a local restaurant with the other volunteers. 9:00 pm: Free time to relax, reflect on the day's experiences, or participate in any evening activities organised by our project partner.

Week 2

It’s time to begin your epic trek! You’ll be supported by a local guide, porters, and a chef, ensuring you have a team of experts by your side every step of the way. Upon arrival, you’ll receive a detailed trek schedule, but you can expect to hike for 4-7 hours each day. The route will take you through lush rainforests, with chances to explore waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints along the way. Your ultimate goal is Uhuru Peak, standing tall at an impressive 5,895 metres. Once you’ve reached the summit, you’ll be guided back down the mountain, completing your journey with an unforgettable life experience. After your trek, you’ll return to the volunteer site, where you can unwind and reflect on your adventure before your departure.

Ongoing

Once your volunteer placement is over, you can choose to stay on in Tanzania to explore what else it and the surrounding areas have to offer.  Whatever you choose to do, we can help make it easy.  We’ll be in touch with you throughout your stay. If you ever need advice or support our team is available to answer your questions. And our Global Emergency Line (24 hours, Mon.-Fri.) will help with urgent matters.   Don’t go alone. Can I travel with a friend or partner?

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. Can I bring my pet along?

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.
